 I have written to help people that are already drivers and have come to the UK with a full licence and experience and want or need to drive on UK roads. I have tried with my experience of driving abroad to identify the areas that you might have difficulty or are in my experience very different please feel free to leave a comment and make suggestions as to improvements that could be made.



If you have come from outside the European community but hold a valid licence  You can drive small vehicles for 12 months from the time you started living in GB. To continue driving you must get a GB licence before the end of the 12 months. You do this by exchanging your licence for a GB one. If you do not do this you must stop driving. You can apply to exchange your licence at any time within five years of starting to live in GB.

UK resident with a driving licence not from the EU

 For non-residents or those drivers visiting from non-EU nations, you can drive in the UK for a maximum of one year before you are required to exchange your licence for a provisional UK licence. You are also required to sit and pass the DVSA driving test before you are allowed to continue driving. The process is usually dependent on the type of car you are driving.

Keep in mind, that only UK nationals and foreigners with valid residency documents can apply for a UK driving permit.

THINGS TO DO 

Spend a small amount of time watching the traffic and if possible go for a drive and get them to explain things. Remember every piece of paint and every road sign has a significance, if you don't know what they are either ask or read the highway code it is available in most good book shops and its also HIGHWAY CODE HERE available free online HERE

Traffic lights in the UK are often computer-controlled and called ‘intelligent’ as they know what traffic is doing and can adjust timing accordingly. Parking

  Parking   Parking is comparatively expensive and there is little opportunity to park for free. Supermarkets often let you park for perhaps an hour but it is very important to read and understand the sign that will be displayed. Often parking is either by paying at a meter or by phone even parking at some Lidl is controlled. Make sure you have a note of the registration number of your vehicle, it is often required. On road parking is strictly controlled you cannot park where there are two yellow lines on the side of the road,  you can however   stop to drop off or pick up passengers.  Do not stop on the controlled area near a school which will be marked with a white or yellow lines be even to drop off passengers.  You may have to park some distance away  Also when near schools you must obey the school crossing controller who will have this sign.
